The popular JISC E-books for FE collection has recently received extra funding from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, so that 60 more in-demand books can be added to the collection, voted for by the FE and sixth form communities. The vote is now complete and the final collection of new books are to be made available from April 2011.

New user-driven model
The initial collection was purchased by JISC (following a national vote) regardless of usage, but a new model is to be used for the additional 60 titles, meaning that JISC only pay for books that are used; less popular titles can also be exchanged for better alternatives.
E-books need a lot of pushing to get them used and the key seems to be promoting individual titles (and perhaps linking from your VLE) rather than the whole collection. You'll find a list of promotional tips here, which you might find useful
Free e-books on the Web
I’ve been collecting a range of useful e-books links, including information about e-book readers and sources of free e-books, take a look at the list: http://www.delicious.com/mattgallon/e-books
Satisfaction survey
As well as e-books, JISC Collections offer a wide range of free and subscription resources to UK further and higher education and they are currently running a survey to get your feedback. If you’d like to take part, please visit this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NTDXSR2
