Libraries have always been a soft target when it comes to funding cuts, across all sectors. Many librarians I meet, talk of freezes on recruitment and redundancy, as well as the need to do more for less. Our recent Webinar on the changing roles of library staff, outlined some of the ways libraries are becoming more and more central to teaching and learning, and perhaps harder to cut.

Resources budgets are also under heavy pressure it seems and if you’re lucky enough to be consulted about your future budget, it’s always helpful to have some comparative figures up your sleeve, so you can compare your proposed budget allocation with the rest of the sector.
The regular CILIP survey of FE libraries used to provide this information, but unfortunately hasn’t been carried out since 2003. I’d like to try and get a picture of library budgets across FE and sixth form colleges in our region and have created a very short (less than 2 minute!) survey for this purpose.
If you answer the survey, your institution and your own identify will remain anonymous (even I won’t have access to them). I would encourage you to respond – if it helps just a few libraries negotiate a slightly better budget for next year, it will have been worth it.
